At the centre of a synchronized viewing session sits a single value: where the film currently is, and whether it is running or held. Everything else in Smart Sync Cinema follows from what that value is allowed to do and who is allowed to change it.
Where the position lives
A shared session stores one playback position for the whole room. Every player in the session follows that value and does not keep a separate local position. When the position changes, it changes once and each screen receives the same change. The room has one second in common, and the separate clocks on the individual machines stop mattering.
That is the whole trick, and it is why the arrangement holds where an agreed countdown does not. Nobody is keeping their own copy of where the film is, so nobody can be wrong about it.
Who is allowed to move it
Playback authority is configurable, because a film night among friends and a class working through a documentary do not want the same rules. Control can sit with a single host, be shared with a co-host or a teacher, or be opened to every viewer. Whoever is responsible for the session sets which of those applies.
When authority sits with one person, the controls in front of everyone else still respond, but their reach ends at their own screen. A viewer who presses pause has not moved the shared position; the action touches only what that viewer can request for themselves. The session value carries on advancing, and the rest of the room sees nothing of it.
Falling behind, and being brought back
A connection can still dip in the middle of a session. When a screen drifts away from the session position, a sync-health indicator makes that visible without anyone having to ask around. Catch-up puts that player back on the session value. If the group needs to stop together, a coordinated break mode pauses the whole room in one action.
A viewer who joins after the start is placed at the session's current position. The first thing on their screen is the scene the room is watching. They do not seek their way toward the group, and the group is not stopped to wait for them.
Interaction attached to the position
Around the video, viewers send reactions, leave a note on a specific frame, and use spoiler-aware chat, which holds a comment back from anyone whose position is behind the point the comment refers to. A frame note stays attached to its frame. A teacher can mark a moment and a student can come back to it afterwards.
The rights check that runs before playback
Content-owner policy and consent are applied before playback begins. The owner's terms carry through the session, including where a title may be played and to whom. RoomHex does not encourage showing content you have no right to show.
Alongside consent, playback runs through the session and no direct file link is exposed, and a playback audit is kept. What that covers is exactly one thing: a viewer sitting in the session has no direct route to the file.
Sort this out before anyone books a room, because no platform setting decides it for you.
Questions to answer before a first session
Whether you may show a particular title to a particular group is agreed with the content owner, before the session goes on a calendar.
