The usual arrangement for watching something together is that each person opens their own copy in their own player, the group agrees a starting point, everyone presses play at roughly the same moment, and the talking happens in a group chat. It holds for the first minute. After that the positions separate.
A stall is never repaid
When a player runs short of buffered video it stops, holds the last frame, and resumes from that same frame once it refills. The time it spent waiting is subtracted from that viewer's position and is not made up afterwards. The player does not run fast to catch up. Every stall, every drop to a lower quality, and every moment the picture is held while it switches leaves one viewer permanently behind the rest, and the gap only ever grows.
Why the usual fixes do not work
Pausing is an instruction to one program on one computer. Announcing it in the chat tells people what happened and does not stop their players. Whoever paused comes back to find the others further ahead than they were at the moment of leaving.
Dragging the scrubber to catch up means guessing where the others are while they keep moving. Overshoot and you have seen scenes they have not. Undershoot and you are still behind. Asking for a position in the chat does not fix it either, because by the time the answer is typed, read, and acted on, the point it named has passed.
Messages arrive when they are sent. The film arrives at whatever point each player has reached. Picture two viewers a few seconds apart, a gap small enough that neither of them has noticed it. The one in front writes a line about the scene in front of them, and for the one behind that line describes something they have not watched yet.
Someone joining after the start opens at the beginning of the file. They ask where everyone is, and the answers are out of date by the time they arrive. They end up hunting for the right moment instead of watching, and the hunt overshoots, showing them the scenes on the way.
The countdown is the last of them. Everyone presses play on the word go, but the word is read at slightly different moments, and that difference is never made up afterwards.
What has to change for the group to hold together
The position has to come out of the individual players and belong to the session: one position for the room instead of one per player, with every player told to follow it. Play, pause and seek act on that value, not on each machine's own playhead. When it moves, every screen moves with it.
A join has to read the same number, so a player opening after the start opens at whatever the session position is in that second. Control has to belong to someone specific as well, because if everyone can move the shared position, one person's pause becomes a pause imposed on people who did not want one.
There is a separate question with no bearing on timing. A group session shows a film to several people at once, and whether that is permitted depends on the rights the content owner has granted. The place for that check is before playback starts.
